The Vex Are About to Get Wild – How Will Guardians Handle It?
In a recent interview, Bungie developers Robert Brooks and Nico Stevens discussed the future of Destiny and the Vex. They indicated that once the current “Final Shape” storyline concludes, the Vex may be able to take on a more prominent role.
Learning to Simulate Our Powers? Yikes.
So get this – the Vex are trying to figure out how to simulate paracausal powers, like our Guardian abilities. Brooks and Stevens dropped hints that if Vex succeeds at this tech upgrade, it will give them a huge edge over us. Not gonna lie; that sounds pretty scary and sweaty. Nobody wants to see teleporting robots blinking around crucible maps using our supers against us.

The Next Destiny Saga and the Vex
There’s also buzz about the Vex looking into the Veil, which will play a big role in the next era of Destiny. Maybe it could tie into how the Vex learns to simulate our Light and Darkness. We’ll have to wait and see. But our machine foes are poised for significant upgrades that will force Guardians to bring their A-game. Time to farm some god rolls and masterwork all the things because if the Vex becomes paracausal, things are about to get wild!
What Exactly is the Veil That’s Got the Vex so Hyped?
The Season of the Seraph story has given us some major clues about the Veil that’s got the Vex’s circuits in a tizzy. Let me break it down for you:
Maya Went too Hard Trying to Link to the Veil
So remember how Maya Sundaresh was doing inexplicable experiments on her scientists to connect them to the Veil? Well, from the logs we found, it seems like it went badly at first – as in straight-up killed them! Not the best start. But later on, it sounds like Maya actually managed to link their minds to it. Wild stuff.

Chioma Esi, research log: the Veil.
She did it. Maya connected people to the Veil. Our own scientists…and they survived. I should be happy – happy that all this horror wasn’t for nothing. But I’m not. I’m disgusted with myself, Maya, and all of us.
This thing, the Veil… it’s some kind of web of consciousness, just like the Vex network but organic instead of artificial. It makes sense why the Vex wants it – paracausal simulations. We have to stop them.
I should be happy to be a part of history, to solve a cosmic riddle. Happy for Maya, happy for all of us. But I’m not. I don’t feel anything. The woman I knew is gone – Maya might as well have died when we landed on Neptune.
But her ghost still haunts me… this place. I don’t know what to do. There’s a generation of children born here now. This is their home.
[sighs] I don’t know what to do.

The Veil is Basically a Giant Brain for the Vex to Hack
From what the Ishtar chick Chioma said, it turns out the Veil is like a huge natural consciousness, similar to the Vex network but organic.

The Vex wants to tap into it to learn how to simulate paracausal power as we Guardians wield, which they can’t do yet. If they could hack the Veil and copy our Light/Darkness abilities, that would be scary times for us!
We Finally Get the DL on What the Heck the Veil Actually Is
The Veil Explained – Kinda?
Okay, so remember how we’ve been wondering forever what the Veil really is? Well, after months of teases, we finally got a straight answer about it…kinda. It came from a random audio log people could totally miss, not some big story moment. But hey, I’ll take what I can get at this point!

Basically, the Veil is described as this huge organic web of consciousness – like a giant natural brain. Which sounds a lot like the Vex network, right? Makes sense why they’d be so intrigued by it.
My guess is the Vex built their own digital network to try and copy the Veil’s natural paracausal powers. They’re all about that simulation life. But anyways, it’s nice to finally get some clarity on WTF the Veil actually is after all this time! Even if it wasn’t the most satisfying reveal for us lore nerds.
Vex simulation

Did you send them into Vex simulation?
Ikora
The path before them is no illusion. The Guardian ventures through the Vex domain itself, where the machines guard their most precious secrets.
Mithrax
How VexNet works?

The VexNet uses similar gateways to the Cloud Striders’ Arc. This means those machines could infiltrate the network and gain access to The Veil itself. You name it – the Cloud Arc is built on the energy field produced by The Veil. Resilient, yes, but not impenetrable. Leaving a backdoor open wouldn’t be impossible for the right intruder…

Unraveling Destiny’s Deepest Lore Mysteries
Let’s break down what we know so far about the Traveler, the Veil, ghosts, and Guardians. This stuff is wild!
The Traveler and the Veil: Two Pieces of the Same Puzzle
So the Traveler represents the physical world, while the Veil is all about memory and consciousness. They’re like two halves of the same whole that split apart back in the early days of Destiny’s lore.

Now, here’s where it gets intense – these two pieces work together in the present day to open portals and allow Guardians to access different realms and timelines!
The Traveler provides the raw matter and energy. At the same time, the Veil gives it meaning through memory and consciousness—pretty trippy stuff.
Ghosts – More Than Just Your Companion

The Traveler created ghosts, but they tap into the Veil’s powers over memory and consciousness. This lets them perform their signature ability – reviving and resurrecting Guardians! When a Guardian dies, their ghost pulls data from the Veil to reconstruct their body and spark their consciousness back to life.
So ghosts are secretly powered by Light and Darkness, making them a key link between the two forces. It makes you look at your ghost differently, doesn’t it?
The Connections Run Deep
There’s still so much we need to understand about how the Traveler, the Veil, ghosts, and Guardians all interconnect. But one thing’s certain – these metaphysical forces weave together in mysterious ways that defy physics and manipulate life and death itself! We’ve only scratched the surface of Destiny’s cosmic lore. I can’t wait to dive deeper!
Digging into Neptune’s Lost Sci-Fi Society
The mysterious history of Neptune and Neomuna is straight out of an epic sci-fi game! Let’s explain how the Traveler and the Veil enabled the unbelievable advanced virtual world during Destiny’s golden age.
Living as a Hologram – How Trippy!

So the citizens of Neomuna could use the Veil’s power to upload their minds into the cloud. They left physical bodies safe in some stasis chamber, and their consciousness got to live on as awesome holograms, almost like something from Halo or Tron!
It reminds me of how in cyberpunk games like Cyberpunk 2077, people can upload their minds into fully digital worlds. Neomuna was doing that long before it was cool! The Veil made this “becoming a hologram” trick possible using its mysterious power over consciousness and memory.
Meanwhile, the Traveler Provided the Juice
You can’t run a giant futuristic virtual society just on memories – you need real energy too! That’s where the good old Traveler came in. Using its Light, it probably powered the servers, networks, and stasis pods that kept Neomuna’s digital realm spinning.
It took both sides – Light and Dark – working together to make Neomuna’s chaotic hologram world work. The Traveler and Veil were the ultimate co-op duo back then!
The Vex had retroactively inserted themselves into Neptune’s history…just like they did on Venus. But unlike Venus, something stopped them short of our habitat. They had to fight their way in. I think it’s the Veil.
Something about the paracausal nature of the Veil is preventing their temporal excursions. But the Vex isn’t giving up.
Chioma
The Scientists Who Turned Humans into Robots and Programs
On Neptune, the Ishtar scientists did experiments to put human minds into machines.
They made Exos – robot bodies with human consciousness. The scientists took dead Exo robot parts and living human minds. Then they combined them to make immortal Exo bodies that humans could go into.
It’s like turning people into cyborgs. Real human minds were going into artificial robot bodies. The logical Vex can’t understand something so strange!
The scientists also turned humans into programs. They uploaded people’s minds into Neomuna’s computer world. So humans could leave their bodies and live as programs in a digital space. Like the movies The Matrix or Tron.
The Vex can’t simulate something beyond physics, with science and spirit together. The experiments did things using Light and Darkness.
Ashermere – A Digital Ghost in the Vex Network

During the Avalon Quest and exploration of the Vex Network chasing Asher around, we learned he could achieve this himself inside the Vex Network.
- While in the Vex Network, we find Ashermere’s mind still alive as data.
- Asher figured out how to upload his consciousness into the Vex system.
- This is like how scientists in the Golden Age uploaded minds into computers.
- It shows human minds can become digital in Vex realms.
- But the Vex Network is only physics, no spiritual Light/Dark.
- So Asher is limited compared to Golden Age digital humans.
- Still, it means even Vex computers can hold human consciousness.
- But they can’t fully capture the metaphysical side with just physics.
So Asher found a way to live on as data in the Vex Network. This shows human minds can exist digitally in Vex realms, though in a constrained form. Blending Light and Dark allows for fuller digital consciousness.
So Where the Heck is Ashermere?
Asher dove into the Vex Network to do some exploring at the end of that cool mission, where we chased his radiolarian fluid all over the place. Pretty wild side quest! Anyway, the dude’s consciousness is currently chilling as data in the Network somewhere.
We’re not sure when he’ll respawn, but fans think he could teleport back next season. It makes sense with Lightfall to show Pyramid ships over Venus – maybe Asher re-emerges, leading the Vex. It could be a sick crossover episode!
Expanding the Vex Lore
Whether Asher returns sooner or later, his whole digitized consciousness thing connects to key pieces of Destiny lore. Like how the Vex can’t simulate Guardians, no matter how hard they try. Our sweet para causal powers totally fry their circuits!
Some Bungie devs mentioned this in an interview recently – the Vex hate not understanding us. So Asher hanging out in the Network could unlock new secrets about Light, Darkness, and what makes us Guardians so awesomely complex.
We’re trying to bring [the Vex] in a little bit more of a personalized way right now and in a way that connects with the Witness’ Story via the Sol Divisive.
These were Vex that went all the way back to Destiny 1 with the Black Heart. They’ve kind of been expanded through piecemeal drops here and there up until Spire of the Watcher, which was a really big insight into the Sol Divisive and how closely aligned they actually are with the Witness.
I think once Final Shape concludes, the Vex might be in a position to do some more stuff.
Stevens
Those Obsessed Vex Worshippers
The Sol Divisive Vex – ya know, the wacky branch that was obsessed with the Black Heart in the Black Garden? Well, they could take center stage down the road!
Vex Lore Deep Dive Coming
The Bungie devs hinted they’ll dive deeper into Vex stuff in the future. And if they do, spotlighting the Sol Divisive could be super interesting for the plot!

These Vex were totally fangirling over the Darkness and partnered up with the Witness. Like obsessed stalker fans! While other Vex do their own things, the Sol Divisive is all about that Dark power.

Makes them way different than the rest of the logical, physics-driven Vex networks. They’ve got metaphysics on the brain!
Looks like the Taken have all cleared out. Why aren’t they fighting us for the memory core?
Ghost
I’m sure they were merely told to destroy the Black Heart’s architect. I doubt they were aware its knowledge is the true threat.
Osiris
You really think this blueprint will help us with the Veil? After all, if the Black Heart was meant to be a copy of the Veil, it didn’t exactly succeed.
Ghost
True. But even studying the failed attempt can lead to useful information.
Osiris
Just How Scary Can the Vex Get?
The Vex lore this season rules! It’s got us thinking about those time-twisting robots. Will they crash the Final Shape party or play a bigger role in the next saga?
Simulating the Light
If the Vex solves their whole “can’t simulate Guardians” issue, that’s bad news for us paracausal heroes. Just imagine mega-powerful Vex Minds based on our skills! Cayde-6 as an evil hydra, or Ikora as a scary harpy? No, thank you!
The Witness may force the Vex to figure it out and join its party. Or the super nerdy Divisive branch cracks the code. Either way, the Vex becoming our metaphysical equals is a terrifying thought!
Of course, they could stay losers who never understand the Light. In which case, we smash them again later when it’s their time to shine.
Is Vex Lore Expansion Coming?
Bungie’s definitely got plans to dig deeper into Vex stories down the road. But will it happen in Final Shape or the next saga? So many possibilities!
I’m hoping we at least see the badass warrior Vex that Calus mentioned. Supposedly the Vex troops we’ve fought are just worker bots! Bring on the real Vex fighters for some epic boss battles.
And who knows what will happen to our universe when Light finally defeats Darkness? A cosmic reset button? At least we’ve got the Nine, Drifter’s shady buddies, waiting in the wings for their time to shine!
You never did tell me why you trust the Nine so much.
Zavala
Oh, I don’t. Not even a little. I trust Orin.
Drifter
Orin?
Zavala
Long story. [sighs] The short of it is…. I may have had a feeling or two for somebody a long time ago. Somebody that lost themselves along the way.
But there’s a little piece of her still out there. A silver… who still has a feeling or two for the somebody I could be.
So I trust her. Because she ain’t never steered me wrong, no matter how rotten I was.
Because at the end of the day, maybe we gotta put our faith in something other than ourselves… even if we’re too stubborn to admit it.
Drifter
I… didn’t expect you to put a lot of stock in faith.
Zavala
And I didn’t expect you to lose yours and keep moving. Guess we’re all full of surprises, ain’t we?
Drifter
I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt that you’re being genuine.
Zavala
Oh, I’m always genuine. People just ain’t always payin’ attention.
For real, though? Moondust might have given me a push. Thought it’d help.
Drifter
Wrap-Up Time, Guardians
That covers the basics of the baffling metaphysical world of the Veil! This organic internet houses minds and memories instead of just data. No wonder the Vex have been obsessed with understanding it since the Golden Age.
Suppose they crack the code on simulating paracausal heroes like us. In that case, the Vex will level up into some seriously intimidating boss characters. Fingers crossed, our digital buddies Ashermere and Maya Sundaresh can help keep their secrets safe!
But wherever the story goes next, it’s gonna be an awesome interstellar journey. Will we team up with Warrior Vex against the Witness? Take a trip through time itself? The possibilities are endless in the Destiny universe!
