Destiny 2’s Future: Vexing Vex or Fresh Foes?
Yo, Guardians! Let’s talk about Destiny 2. The Destiny 2’s Final Shape, our last Light and Darkness saga expansion, is dropping early next year. But where does that leave us? Bungie’s been tight-lipped, only letting slip that Destiny 2 is far from over. More content is on the way, and with the seasonal model in full swing, we’ll likely dive right back into action after The Final Shape.
During a recent media tour noticed by Forbes, the narrative team gave us peeks into what’s cooking. Senior Narrative Designer Nikko Stevens hinted at some post-Final Shape action, saying, “I think once Final Shape concludes, the Vex might be in a position to do some more stuff.”

The Vex, our time-traveling robotic enemies, have been chilling in the background, biding their time. We’ve been busy rallying Cabal, Fallen, and possibly even Hive (thanks to the upcoming resurrection of Savathun). But the Vex? They’re the enigmatic hivemind, the shadowy figure lurking in the corner of the room.

Our last major tango with the Vex was during Lightfall. They’ve been laying low since then, but they’ve got a history of making things spicy. Remember their siege on Neomuna? And their meddling with the Cloudstrider tech? Plus, who can forget the Black Heart from Destiny 1, their attempted copycat of the Veil? Our buddy Asher Mir is still stuck in the Vex network after Io got vaulted.

Destiny 2’s Final Shape: New Enemies or Same Old Dance?
Now, here’s the thing. After The Final Shape, are we just hopping back on the merry-go-round of “Who’s the enemy of the season?” Is it going to be the Vex again? Destiny fans have been itching for a new nemesis for eons. The Taken don’t count; they’re just reskinned baddies with a power-up. We almost had something new with the Tormentors, but they’re pretty much Cabal sidekicks.

Remember when we all thought those ominous pyramids would spill forth a fresh enemy race? Instead, we got the Disciples. They’re the lone survivors of a lost civilization; all mashed up into one entity, The Witness. A big fleet of ships heading our way and no invading army? Major buzzkill.
I’ve been mulling over what could happen if we defeat The Witness. What if he breaks down into his original race, and we face off against them? Heck, I’d even be up for battling actual humans, awoken, and exos with proper enemy AI.
Although a new enemy race seems like a long shot, one or two new units in the existing lineup might be possible. After a decade of Destiny, it’s high time we got something new. The prospect of another Vex storyline just doesn’t cut it for me. But hey, who knows what Bungie has up their sleeve? Here’s hoping for a surprise that’ll blow our helmets off!
